What to Expect
Lake Bogoria
This lake, known as “The healing place,” is about 3 3-hour drive from Lake Nakuru. It is home to one of the largest populations of the lesser flamingoes. The lake is geothermally active on the western shore, with geysers and hot springs. Sulphur water gushing out of the ground has therapeutic value. The hot springs are natural spas and steam baths. The hot spring water geysers are extremely hot – the gushing out water is boiling, and visitors are forewarned to be Careful. The reserve has a herd of the relatively uncommon Greater Kudu. Other large mammals include buffalo, zebra, cheetah, baboon, warthog, caracal, spotted hyena, impala, and dik-dik.
Samburu Game Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is rich in flora and fauna, lying on the flood plains and bottom land of the Wasi Nyiro drainage system. The reserve features rare northern specialist species such as the Grevys Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx (also called the Samburu Special Five).
Wildlife Includes Elephants, cheetahs, reticulated giraffes, oryxes, gerenuks, vervet monkeys, zebras, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
Over 380 bird species have been recorded on the wilderness trails.
Aberdares
Among the picture square and unique attractions in Aberdare are the dragon teeth and volcanic rock formations. The Maumau (freedom fighters) used an old Fig tree with a cleft in its trunk as a mailbox. Aberdare National Park is 180 km from Nairobi and was gazetted in 1950, with an area of 767 sq KM. Animals found here include leopard, serval, mountain bongo, antelopes, elephants, black colobus monkey, warthog, and bushbuck.
Lake Nakuru
“A beautiful wildlife haven”
On the Great Rift Valley floor lies the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats ranging from Lake Nakuru to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, picnics, and game drives. Attractions include flamingos, mammals, viewpoints, hills, waterfalls, and unique vegetation.
Masai Mara National Reserve
Regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas, covering more than 1,500 sq km, it is one of Kenya’s most popular tourist destinations. Mara is in the Great Rift Valley in an open grassland. Wildlife is most concentrated on the reserve’s western escarpment. The Masai Mara National Reserve has been called the Kingdom of Lions, and these regal and powerful hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are hyenas and smaller predators such as Jackals. This is an incredible natural wonder, a place where Maasai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, a place.
Lake Naivasha & Hells Gate
“A Walk on the Wild Side”
Named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries, Hell’s Gate National Park is a remarkable part of the Great Rift Valley. Its spectacular scenery, including towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub-clad volcanoes, and belching plumes of geothermal steam, makes it one of the most atmospheric Parks in Africa. Hell’s Gate is an ideal venue for a day trip from Nairobi. In addition to the biodiversity that includes raptors, visitors can enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing, and a natural spa.
Amboseli National Park
“Home of the African Elephant”
Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here: the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah, and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community, which lives around the park, and experience their authentic culture.
Tsavo West National Park
From the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water from the underparched lava rock that is the Mzima Springs to the Shetani lava flows, Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged wilderness. The savannah ecosystem comprises open grasslands, scrublands, and Acacia woodlands. Belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges, including the Poacher’s Lookout, where visitors can see the teeming herds in the plains below. Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world, and attractions include elephant, rhino, Hippos, lions, cheetah, leopards, buffalo, diverse plant and bird species, including the threatened corncrake and near-threatened Basra Reed Warbler.
Tsavo East National Park
“Theatre of the Wild”
The sight of dust-red elephant wallowing, rolling, and spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. This, along with the 300-kilometer-long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, makes for an adventure unlike any other in the Tsavo East. The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya. It is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust–red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu, gerenuk, and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.
